The best day out in history
York Castle Museum is one of Britain's leading museums of everyday life, displaying thousands of household objects in room settings and exhibitions.
It is best known for its recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate, named after the museum's founder Dr John Kirk, which uses real shop fronts and collections of authentic goods to take visitors back to another era.
The museum building was originally used as a prison and our newest attraction, York Castle Prison, tells the stories of people who lived and sometimes died within its walls, including infamous highwayman Dick Turpin.
Other highlights include The Sixties, a nostalgic look back at a more recent period of change, and The Studios, three interactive centres for a regular programme of activities and talks.
